HARRY COWANS, the former chairman of the House of Commons Transport Select Committee and Labour MP for Tyne Bridge, has died aged 52.

Cowans became an MP in 1976 after winning the Newcastle Central by-election and was sponsored by the National Union of Railwaymen. In the 1983 election he retained his Tyne Bridge seat with a 11,693 majority.

He chaired the transport committee from 1983 until earlier this year, after helping prepare a report on bus deregulation.
