Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

ANapplication involving the transfer of eight vehicles of 43 tons from contract A to public A licence was concluded at Hanley last Friday. The case was previously adjourned on August 24.

Sidney Machin, Ltd., of Talke, the applicants, wished to carry goods in connection with the business of J. G. Gregory and Son, Ltd., as required, with their A fleet. Mr. S. Machin was the transport manager of J. G. Gregory, in addition to being a haulier.

In submission, Mr. R. Webb, objecting for the British Transport Commission, said that Machin's wanted transport at their finger-tips to ensure speedy deliveries, and yet they wanted it cheaply. Existing transport . facilities in the area were adequate and there was no reason why British Road Services should not carry mineral consignments for 1. G. Gregory.

Mr. G. C. Tinsdill, for the applicants, concluded that the vehicles at the B.R.S.

depots at Stoke. Talke, arid Stafford, were not under-utilized. The figures had shown that on, outward journeys they were 75 to 91. per ,cent full.. For an objection to be relevant it should be shown that transport facilities in the district, or between the places which the applicants wished to serve, were in excess.

The objector should be able to supply transport to the customer with the same regularity as the applicant, and at the same, or at a better, cost. It was uneconomic for Machin's to carry part loads on a contract A vehicle, continued Mr. Tinsdill. They were not only contract A operators but established general carriers already holding a public A licence.

All this, in addition to the fact that the business of Gregory's was increasing, was sufficient grounds for the application to be granted.

The West Midland Licensing Authority, Mr. J. Else, reserved his decision.
