An Inquiry from Holland.

We are notified by a correspondent that Messrs. Vander Grinten and Cremer, of Mook-by-Vymegen, are in the market for some singledeck motorbuses. Three or four vehicles are required, and they will each have to accommodate 16 passengers. Particulars may be sent direct t6 the above address, and mention should be made of this journal. Trailer Tramcars.

Our Berlin Correspondent writes :—" Your leader on Trailer Tramcars' I have read with interest, as what is only a menace in London has for years been a fact in Berlin. which capital the Grosse Berliner Strassenbahn-Gesellschaft has gradually converted into a sort of railway-junction, a complicated network of tramcar lines covering the whole city. Whether there are any by-laws in Berlin respecting minimum clearance between any Iwo cars in motion, I am unable to state but if so, the condition of affairs is much the same as that of which you complain in regard to London : such by-laws are more honoured in the breach than in the observance, the situation in Berlin being aggravated by the use of trailers. Unfortunately, the trailer is a necessary evil for the Berliner without. it, he would often find himself condemned to a weary tramp or a comparatively expensive cabride. Thanks to the tramcars and the practice of hitching on trailers at certain hours of the day, many of the Berlin streets get into a shocking state of congestion, in particular the Leipziger Strasse at midday and shop-closing time, to mention but one thoroughfare of many. If you can keep the trailer out of London, do so, as it is a terrible nuisanc:?.. Still, for Berlin it is, as said, a necessary nuisance, and will remain such until the Corporation has extended the Metropolitan underground railway system. The motorbus makes relatively little headway in Berlin owing to the Grosse ' competition."

A Private-service Commer Car.'

We have good reports of a light " Commer-Car " single-deck bus which has been in the service of Mr. J. Hope Morley, J.P., of Tonbridge. Rent, for the past nine months. This vehicle has been used to maintain a service between Mr. 3.Iorley's country house and his town house in Grosvenor Place. It has regularly conveyed guests and luggage, as well as fruit, flowers, poultry and vegetables, for household consumption. During the London season we are informed that the return journey of 60 miles was made on five days a week regularly. The Birmingham and Midland Omnibus Co., Ltd., has applied for licenees for 40 motorbuses from this Birmingham City Council. Covered tops are suggested for the new machines, which, we are informed, are to be " K.P.L.s."

We regret that pressure on our space has necessitated the holding over of an illustration of an ArrolJohnston 15-seated char-h-bancS. The chassis of this machine is, we are informed by the maker, the Arrol-Johnston Car Co., Ltd., Paisley. the company's new 15-cwt. cons t< ' I al-vehicle: model.

The "Casting of Filth" by Motorbuses.

On Thursday of lastweek, two summonses against the National Steam Car Co., Ltd., and two of its drivers, were heard at. Lambeth Police Court. The complaint was with regard to " the casting upon the public roadway at Peckham Rye from two of the company's motor-omnibuses of a quantity of filth-to wit, refuse, oil and waste." The Camberwell Borough Council were the plaintiffs. Counsel for the defence argued that what. was deposited upon the roadway was not. " filth," that it was not in fact " casting," and that in no possible circumstances could it be a nuisance in law. The statute did not take account of an accidental casting. Dr. Francis Stevens, medical officer of health at Camberwell, said that he had seen the oil which fell from the motorbuses upon the road. It. was usually a " greenish, greasy, semifluid substance, and it was liable to spoil people's boots and clothes. The defendants pleaded that they had taken precautions to remove the nuisance, and they stated that they had someone constantly on duty at the point, in question to remove the oil or to place sand on it in the, event of any being accidentally deposited in the, roadway. The various counsel engaged, together with the magistrate, at the conclusion of the case, all testified that they were in the habit of regularly using the motorbuses, which they found a great convenience and very comfortable. A fine of 10s. with las. costs was imnosed.

Traffic Congestion.

The Royal Automobile Club, winch contributed a vote of £25 a few weeks ago to the traffic campaign of the Commercial Motor Users Association, is now taking active steps effectually to direct attention to the traffic congestion which is caused by L.C.C. tramcars and track repairs. The same Iflatter is at the moment before a special committee of the Roads Improvement Association, whilst this journal has received a written

assurance 110141 the Railway Department of the Board of Trade that. it will take up the matter of the infraction of any by-laws by L.C.C. motormen, on its being furnished with definite instances of those infringements. sN list is being prepared.
