Over-riding speed limiters

Reading CM (29 Oct-4 Nov) my attention was drawn to your headline "Drivers beat HGV speed limiters" and the accompanying picture of a Sturdy calibration label.

While agreeing there is a major problem in relation to interference with speed limiters, the use of a Sturdy calibration label gives the impression that our product was susceptible to interference in the manner described. This is categorically not the case—it is not possible to override the Sturdy system by "simply pumping the accelerator pedal" or "by using nothing more than the vehicle's existing controls". Also, our system would not have been installed as original equipment on any of the vehicle makes mentioned. Sturdy is a world leader in control technology with a reputation for product excellence

with many thousands of systems fitted, However, in support of the general message contained in the article we can confirm that surveys commissioned during the past 12 months, by Sturdy and other organisations, have indicated that only 33% of limiters are working correctly in all aspects.

After their initial installation there is no legal requirement for operational testing of speed limiters. This means in theory that a vehicle can pass its annual test even if the speed limiter is not working.

We hope this will be corrected in the near future with the introduction of an EL requirement to test the operation of the speed limiter and the set speed annually Brian Graham,
