• H Davies & Son's licence has been truncated by North Western Licensing Authority Martin Albu because of maintenance problems.

The firm of Mold, North Wales, holds a licence authorising 25 vehicles and 10 trailers. The LA directed it should terminate next April, instead of in 1994.

DOT vehicle examiner David Aitken told a Manchester disciplinary inquiry that although mechanically good, the firm's vehicles were rather shabby and rough looking. He had carried out a maintenance investigation in August, following the issue of a prohibition notice indicating neglect. Fourteen vehicles were examined; no prohibitions were issued but seven minor defects were found. Aitken said that since 1987 there had been 27 prohibition notices. The annual test firsttime pass rate was only 50%.

Partner Glyn Davies said they were currently getting their sys tems up to BS5750. The vehicles were tippers, working out of quarries and the faults found were of the type that occurred suddenly with such vehicles. In his opinion, 95% of the defects were due to the type of work undertaken. The period between inspections had been reduced from six weeks to three and a vehicle that had been giving them trouble had been scrapped.
