• Inter City Trucks and its sister company Dockspeed International are fitting 12 trucks with Logiq satellite communication equipment. Six vehicles will have vehicle monitoring, tracking and message communication equipment which will transmit the information from on-board sensors.
The vehicles will take part in the Metafora project, organised by the University of Westminster in London. Metafora aims to evaluate the benefits of satellite communication systems for small to medium-sized haulage companies. Operators from the Netherlands, France, Belgium and Greece are also taking part.
The project has provided funding support for installing the equipment.
Inter City Trucks and Dockspeed are both international hauliers. Dockspeed specialises in refrigerated transport, while Inter City Trucks operate tilts, curtainsiders and box trailers.
Patrick D'Arcy of Inter City Trucks says the systems will offer "high security for high-value loads" rather than monitoring hazardous goods in transit. Inter City's first vehicle, a Leyland Daf 95.360, was fitted with tracking, communication and satellite equipment at Channel Commercials in Ashford.
