Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

by Nicky Wilmore • About 27 drivers with London Brick who are to lose their jobs just before Christmas are part of a package of 340 redundancies at the UK's biggest brickmaker. The drivers will be cut from the Stewartby depot in Bedfordshire, which serves the local Stewartby and Kempston works. About 100 vehicles will be left after the cuts. Production at the sites is being scaled down as demand from the construction industry continues to fall.

London Brick will be offering a voluntary redundancy package to drivers at both sites, and those based at its Peterborough works where production remains unaffected. The drivers are all pretty long-service, so they would get good benefits from the package," according to company spokesman Ray McErlean. "But I couldn't say if we're likely to get the volunteers or not."

Production will be cut back from 20 November. The drivers could be made redundant at any time between then and the end of the year depending on orders," says McErlean.

London Brick, a Hanson subsidiary, has cut its workforce from 4,000 in 1989 to 1,750 in a series of redundancies.
