• Lancashire Police are appealing for witnesses in connection with the M61 motorway disaster in which 13 people died and a further three were seriously injured.
The accident, which involved nine vehicles, occurred on the M16 at Walton Le Dale at 13:15 hours on 28 October on the north-bound carriageway, near Junction nine, the Walton Summit intersection.
If anyone saw the accident or any of the vehicles involved prior to the accident the police would like to hear from them. They are also anxious to hear from the lorry drivers who stopped at the scene and helped the emergency services.
In particular, they would like to hear from the driver of a flat bed lorry with a sheeted load, possibly a blue or faded greeny-coloured sheet, who told someone he lived in Keithley or Huddersfield and was on route to Blackpool before returning home.
The Police would also him to speak to the driver of an aluminium-coloured articulated tipper, also sheeted with a green or blue tarpaulin. He is said to be a well-built Scotsman, about 30, with dark hair. The driver concerned later overtook another vehicle that had been stopped at the scene at Shap, and waved to the driver of that vehicle. It is thought that the tractive unit is possibly a Scania, silver in colour with a broad blue stripe.
The police have established an incident room at Preston where they can be contacted — Telephone 0772 57287/ 57289/203203.
