Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• A lorry driver who tampered with his tachograph has been fined 2750 by Perth Sheriff Court, Samuel Waite, of County Down, Northern Ireland, admitted driving an articulated lorry without due care and attention following an incident on 8 October last year when his vehicle was in collision with the central island of a roundabout.

He also admitted using the lorry with an interrupter switch fixed to the tachograph so that the speed, time and distance trace was innacurate.

Advocate Lawrence Nisbet, appearing for Waite, described the area as an accident black spot, while his client maintained that the camber of the road had contributed to the crash. Waite had used the interrupter switch to allow him to work more hours than was permissible as it showed he had taken rest when that was not the case. Waite had no previous convictions.

Sheriff John McInnes said the use of the interrupter switch was a serious offence, as it allowed him to infringe the regulations whenever he wanted to. Waite was fined £750 for interfering with the tachograph, and £120 for driving without due care and attention.
