Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• A massive back-log of driver training needs is building up, warned RTITB director-general Mr Eric Tindall this week. He issued the warning when he opened the Mid-Kent Group Training Association on Wednesday, and when he opened the Mid-Anglia GTA yesterday.

Mr Tindall said that a recent survey of the industry showed a need for 15,000 drivers to be trained in 1971-2, but they had found that employers intended to train only about half that number. They had also found that employers were actually training a little over half their stated intention — only about two-thirds of 1970-1 activity. "It is increasingly clear that a massive back-log is building up for the future once the economy begins to recover momentum," he warned.

The Mid-Anglia GTA is based at 79A High Street, Old Fiction, Peterborough, and embraces 30 companies with 800 vehicles and 1200 employees. The MidKent GTA, whose headquarters are at Kent County Show Ground, Detling, Maidstone, was formed in July last year by 23 companies. The total number of employees now involved is 820 of which the majority are drivers. Between them the Group has a total of 650 vehicles.
