Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Safir protective masks made by Chapman and Smith have been redesigned and the range of filter pads produced has been extended to improve the efficiency of the mask and to give protection from a wider variety of non-toxic dusts, powders and so on created in industrial processing.

Examples of such materials listed by the company comprise more than 50 types of powdered substances that include wood chippings, paper, fibres, borax, jute, cotton, hair, soot, coffee and alabaster. A face-piece fitted with a filter pad weighs less than loz.

Improved ventilation holes produce a greater cooling effect on the wearer's face and also increase the pliability of the face piece. A continuous-elastic head strap is claimed to stay in a holding position at all times. Filter pads incorporate Filtex, a synthetic covering material which promotes a better face-piece /filter-pad seal and reduces resistance to breathing.

The standard quality filter is a general-purpose type and is available with refill filter pads of cotton wool, gauze or Filtex. A super-quality filter has cottonwool filter pads faced with fine surgical gauze and contains 10 per cent more filtering material. In the case of fire-resistant filters, the filter pad is of standard quality but is treated to provide resistance to fire.

Type A oversewn filters are specially developed for the vehicle and paint-spray industries. The pads are extra thick and are fully oversewn at the edges to prevent fluff or pieces of cotton wool escaping and spoiling newly-painted surfaces. Similar to the Type A, Type B is of half the thickness which reduces resistance to breathing.

The Safir mask can be converted into a Micro-Safir dust mask that filters out particles with sizes down to 0.5 micron which include many dangerous powders. Filter pads can be supplied in dispenser cartons, which help to keep filters clean in factory conditions, as well as in the usual polythene packs.
