Tcommanding officer of an Army camp was on Monday refused a licence by the West Midland Licensing Authority to run a coach for supporters of the camp sports team and to charge separate fares.
When the application was made a month ago, Lt.-Col. R. Headlam , Keenlyside, Park Hall, Oswestry, said that if he could gain additional revenue by charging supporters, the camp would be able to have a second team and to run a coach through an existing bus operator.
In his reserved judgment, the Authority, Mr. W. P. James, said: We think that as a matter of public interest the existing services are available for those who want to support the team, and we think there would be some abstraction of traffic.
"While we agree that your motives are of the highest order, we refuse your application for the reasons we have given and on the grounds that it would mean wasteful competition."
Mr. James added that he thought it was " optimistic " of the commanding officer to think that the charge would provide enough money for him to run a coach for the second team.
