SPECIAL A licences had been granted for over 1,200 vehicles in the area, said Mr. F. Williamson, North-western Licensing Authority, at the annual dinner of the North-western (Eastern) Area of the Road Haulage Association in Manchester on Monday.

Some of these vehicles had been brought rather long distances into the territory, but, generally, the area had not gained more vehicles than it had lost by changes of base and, in accordance with the 1953 Act, the balance of transport was being maintained: In some instances, where large units had been bought, they had been split up by assignments, so that a further object of the 1953 Act was being achieved.

G1VEN reasonable weather, the freight transport available this winter should be adequate, the Winter Transport Central Joint Conference has decided. British Road Services will be ready to assist the railways and the capacity represented by vehicles sold by B.R.S. to hauliers is expected to be available.

THE Association of Optical Practitioners have asked the Minister of Transport to make legislation to prevent short-sighted persons from driving. It would include power for the courts and licensing authorities to demand medical or optical reports.

SOUTHEND'S last trolleybus was withdrawn last week. Southend Transport Department claimed to be one of the first undertakings in the country to run trolleybuses.

NO CREWS FOR 25 BUSES (IN Tuesday morning Sheffield Trans\--1 port, Department was unable to operate 25 scheduled vehicles because there were no crews to run them.
