Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

O(N WING to restrictions of space it is possible to show the full range of Karrier chassis, which includes models for passenger-carrying work having a seating capacity from 20 to 68 persons, and in the goods-carrying category types suitable for pay-loads from two tons to 12 tons.

Both the petrol-engined passenger chassis are neW models; the Chaser is a four-wheeler for 32 to 35-seater bodies • the four-cylindered engine develops 6 b.h.p. and has a bore and stroke of 4.4, ins. and 6 ins. This machine can, if desired, be equipped with a six-cylindered 93 b.h.p. engine. A detachable cylinder head is incorporated in the " fou r."

A cone-and-plate elotch, fitted with a stop, drives the four-speed gearbox. which has a liberally ribbed casing. This box is carried in a cradle -which can be dropped to the ground after removing four large pins and undoing the shaft connections. Either normal or forward control can be arranged. The two-piece propeller shaft makes use of ballcentred, fabric-disc couplings and the rear axle is of the worm type. Other interesting features are the servooperated four-wheel brakes with quickly detachable facings, a 36-gal, tank and 36-in. by 6-in. tyres.

The trolley-bus on this stand is a double-decker for Doncaster Corporation; the chassis is a six-wheeler and has air-pressure braking. The tyres are 36-in. by 8-in. pneumatics.

A new six-wheeler is known as the Consort and is shown in chassis form. It has a six-cylindered sleeve-valve engine, with single sleeves, oil cooling, detachable heads, a centrally disposed flywheel and 10 main hearings. The maximum b.h.p. is 120 at 1,400 r.p.m. On the neat side is the water pump, which is chain driven from the layshaft.

A plate-and-cone clutch is installed ; behind it is the four-speed gearbox which is carried in a special sub-frame. Left-hand control is provided and spring-loaded plungers lock the selectors in the gearbox, thus preventing two gears from being simultaneously moved into engagement.

Two pairs of semi-elliptic springs

carry the axles of the bogie ; these are of the -inverted-worm pattern. The springs have positive enawise location and each pair is free to swivel ow a fulcrum bracket attached to the frame.

Bumper pads limit the travel of the axles.

A frame height of 2 ft. 1 in. is arranged and the rear platform is dropped. The hand lever operates brakes on the forward driving axle, whilst the pedal, coupled to a servo device, expands shoes in the drums of the rear axle of the bogie. Cam-and-roller steering is standardized.

Coming now to the four goods-carrying models, the smallest is the 0Y2 type, shown as a flat lorry. This has a 26-40 h.p. engine, and the chassis is mounted upon 34-in. by 7-in, pneumatics.

Next is the CYR-50-cwt. chassis having a wheelbase of only 9 ft. It is a low-loader much favoured by municipal users. •It is mounted on 2-in. by 5-in. solid tyres and has a turning circle of 30 ft. It is well suited to refuse-collec

tioTnhweork largest vehicle is the nine-tonner, type KIVF6, exhibited as a flat lorry. The 80 b.h.p. engine drives -both axles of the bogie. This machine is, of course, a rigid six-wheeler. Servo braking is specified and the tyres are of 42-in. by 9-in. dimensions. A specialwheeWifting device is installed. One of the most striking machines in the Show is the new Karrier TT-type tractor-trailer outfit, which is designed to haul loads of 30 tons. The tractor has fear wheels and the trailer portion has two steer. able front wheels and a four-wheeled bogie at the rear. The exhibit is one which hasbeen ordered by the London Midland and Scottish Railway Co. The engine develops 47 b.h.p. and is mounted in an inclined sub-frame It drives, through the new plate-cum;cone clutch, a four-speed main gearbox and a two-speed auxiliary box, giving in all eight forward ratios.

An automatic coupling is used between the tractor and trailer ; this can work up to an angle of 40 degrees. This coupling consists of two main parts ; one takes the tractive load whilst the other takes the lifting strain when the pneumatic ram is used to lift a part or the whole of the weight borne by the front wheels of the trailer. The turatable has four reaction brackets which take all load off the king-pin, even when the fore part of the trailer is raised. Air-pressure braking is fitted to the trailer and should it become accidentally disconnected the brakes are automatically applied.

Two detail features call for particular comment on this stand. One is the gas-producer equipment of learrier manufacture which is shown on the CYR chassis. The other is the clever wheel-lifting device intended to facilite,te the handling of the spare wheel ; its rotation upon its spindle causes the carrier to rise or fall.
