Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

MTAM! kinds of trailer have been L designed and produced by Cardmore Six Wheelers, Ltd., at the company's works at Finchley, London, N.12, and a speciality has been made of equipping motor chassis with trailing units, or carriers, having the front end superimposed on the tractor unit, thus converting the ordinary four-wheeled

machines into articulated six-wheelers. Now, however, the company is also marketing a complete articulated eightwheeler, including the motive unit.

The machine is intended to carry loads of from 17-20 tons, the rear end of the trailing unit, or carrier, being supported by a bogie of four wheels in line carried on two short oscillating. axles-'-an arrangement which affords good road adhesion. The new model, which is called the Carrimore Lynx, was described in our issue , dated October 29th and it is exhibited for the first time at this exhibition. It has a six-cylindered overhead-camshaft engine, the bore of which is 4.126 ins, and the stroke Iii ins., the power developed at 1,600 r.p.m. being 107 bl-P.

The engine, single-plate clutch and four-speed gearbox form a unit suspended at three points in -the frame. The cylinders are east monobloc fashion, being held to the aluminium crankcase by long bolts extending down ' to the five main bearings of the 2f-in. crankshaft. The engihe oltbodies 'all the recognized features of modern prac

tire and is a highly efficient unit. Provision is made for magneto or coil ignition, or both, ' there being an arrangement for two sparking plugs per cylinder. Transmission is by an enclosed shaft with a very strong spherical thrust hearing and a fully floating driving axle, and double reduction is effected by spiral-bevel and double-helical gears, giving an overall ratio on top gear of 9.48 to 1. ' The tractor frame is sturdily built, the main members being of channel section 0 ins, in depth and the carrier frame has side-members 13 ins, deep and 4 in.s. across the web. The loading height is approximately 4 ft 7 ins.

The arrangement of the trailing bogie which provides for the pivoting of the short axles about transverse and longitudinal axes, should be examined, for it is ingenious and of sound design, Dewand re-assisted brakes act upon all eight wheels--an important feature with a machine intended for such large loads. Steering is of the Mantes type and very light.

The 3-4-ton and 5-6-ton pneumatictyred trailers and the 4-5-ton solid-tyred trailer chassis, which occupy a prominent position on this stand, •are dealt with in a separate article, on the subject of trailers, which appears elsewhere in this issue.
