A LTHOUGLI the B.A.T. chassis ā€˛tiLmade its bow before the British public only, in September last, the maker, Harris and Hasell (1929), Ltd., has for a considerable number of years been engaged in the commercialmotor industry. The two new models shown for the first time at Olympia are the direct outcome of that period of experience. By reason of the fact that this is positively the first appearance of the B.A.T. Super-Pullman Straight-eight chassis we will deal with this machine in the first instance. It is designed to carry 32-seater bodies.

The eight-cylindered engine has a bore and stroke of 31 ins, and 4 ins. respectively, giving an R.A.O rating of 34 h.p. The valves are mounted side by side, and they, together with the inlet and exhaust manifolds, are disposed on the near sides of the power unit ; this enhances accessibility as the model has forward control. Lubrication is by gear-type pump to the crankshaft, connecting-rod bearings and to the camshaft. semi-automatic control is provided for the distributor of the coil-ignition set. Mixture is supplied by a 'Zenith carburetter ; cooling is by a pump circulation aided by a fan.

A dry-plate clutch conveys the power to a unit-mounted four-forward-speed gearbox ; rubber-insulated suspension is provided for the engine-gearbox unit. Three metallic universal joints are used for the divided propeller shaft, which drives the fully floating worm-type rear axle. Hydraulically operated brakes, controlled by .pedal, workin the drums of all four wheels, whilst the tniergeney brake is hand-operated. The shackles of the underslung rear springs Require no lubrication. The wheelbase and track of this new model are 16 ft. 6 ins. and 5 ft. 10 ins. respectively.

Although the Cruiser model, for 20 R14

seater bodies has been available only for a comparatively short time it has made good headway. It has a sixeylindered engine of 3i ins, bore and 4 ins, stroke, developing 59 b.h.p: at

2,600 r.p.m. of the crankshaft. The Treasury rating is 27.3 h.p.

One of the 20-seaters carries a Duple de luxe coach body, whilst the other is a service bus with a Strachan's body. The 2-ton tilt-van has a Robson body.

Seven bearings carry the balanced crankshaft of the Continental engine; this, with thc gearbox mounted at its rear end, is carried on three rubber. cushioned bearer points. The cylinder block is east in one with the crankcase and the cylinder head is detachable. Aluminium pistons, steel connecting rods, side-by-side valves, a chain-driven camshaft, Delco-Remy coil ignition, a Zenith carburetter, hot-spot induction, belt-driven fan and pump assembly and a radiator with thermostatically controlled shutters are items in the interesting specification.

rubber-instilated bracket carries the intermediate bearing of the divided propeller shaft. On the pinion ,shaft of the spiral-bevel axle is mounted the drum of the hand-operated transmission

brake. Service hfakes consist of an hydraulically operated set, shoes being carried in the drum of each road wheel. Immediately behind the pedal is a variable-leverage inechanism which

gives graduated control. Semi-elliptic springs front and rear carry the Lussy patent frame with special outrigger brackets for the body. These 'Consist of tubular cross-members extending the full width of the vehicle, passing through brackets on the frame, and they are stayed by oval-section tubes with trapped ends bolted to split lugs on the tube ends and to the brackets on the frame members.

Adjustable rake is provided for the column of the worm-and-Rut steering mechanism ; the angle of the facia board is also variable. Single 32-in, by 6-in. tyres are used for the front wheels, those on the rear wheels being dual.
