MITE first vehicle that catches -the J.. eye on this stand is the interesting Pa,vesi-type four-wheel-drive tractor. This has a four-cylinderecl air-cooled engine, having a bore of 4 ins, and a stroke of 41 ins. Power is transtnitted through a semi-automatic gearbox drhieh provides four forward speeds and a reverse, as well as an emergency low
gear. An open propeller shaft with metal universal joints to thefl rear crossshaft is incorporated in the design, Anal drive being by spur gearing in oil-tight cases. Each driving axle is equipped with a differential lock.
The frame, which is divided at the centre, is of channel-section, the rear half being free to swivel around the centre tubular member fixed to the front portion when traversing uneven ground. . Semi-elliptic springs are employed at the beck and the front. The road wheels ate 4 ft. 3 ins. in diameter and are provided with solidrubber tyres. Each wheel is equipped
with ten strakes, these being capable of being readily swung into position for crossing soft ground.
Steering is effected by means of a wheel which acts through helical gears and universal joints on a spinpinian which engages with a semi-circular rack attached to each frame. An electric starter-motor and gear-driven
dynamo are provided. The track is 4 ft. 10i ins., the wheelbase 7 ft. 11 ins., and the turning circle 36 ft., the unladen weight being 3 tons 18 cwt. The normal speed on top gear, at 1,600 r.p.m., is 10 m.p.h.
The reconnaissance cat differs only in a few points. For instance, the steel frame is lighter, it being made from pressings, and the winch is omitted. The wheels are shod with 40-in. by 9-in. pneumatic tyres. The track is .5 ft. 11 ins, and the wheelbase approximate4 7 ft. 7 ins. The normal speed On top gear, at 1,600 r.p.m., is 23 m.p.h.
The weight of this vehicle is about. 2 tons 15 cwt.—a considerable reduction
over that of the tractor. The gear ratios are as follow :—First 4.3 to r, second 2.45 to 1, third 1.48 to 1, and top gear is, of course, direct.
