A NORTH WALES truck driver who committed 28 offences of falsifying tachograph records has been warned to expect suspen sion of his HGV licence.
C David Jones, of Rhiw. Pwllheli, appeared before Welsh Traffic CommissionerDavid Dixon at a Mold public inquiry. He worked for NR Evans at the time of the offences. That company had received a two-week licence suspension after some 845 offences were discovered (CM 20 January) and five other drivers lost their licences at appeal (CM 24 February).
Traffic examiner Richard Mill reported that acting on information received, VOSA enforcement staff made co-ordinated visits to all the company's depots. Jones, who was employed at the Gaerwen. Isle of Anglesey, depot was one of 60 drivers subsequently prosecuted. He pleaded guilty to nine offences, with another 19 being taken into account, and was fined £540 with £60 costs.
When interviewed Jones had said he had earned his HGV 28 tachograph offences were pursued driving licence in the Army and had had no formal training on the hours and tachograph rules. He claimed that as he got to know the law he had refused to work illegally and been asked to leave the company. It had been stupid of him to accept his employer's view that if he was tipping on private land he need not record it.
Trying to live on £6 an hour was hard, he told the TC, so he had claimed extra hours on his timesheet. It was not possible to pick and choose who you worked for where he lived and he had had The TO is not only considering the falsification of tachograph records but to take what was available, also the fact that Jones admitted defrauding his employer.
