THE USE of an unqualified driver, having no 0licence and the absence of fuel tank filler cap cost a London company £1,450 in fines and costs after it failed to appear before the Hillingdon magistrates_ Highgate Scaffolding, of Highbury, London, was fined £400 for permitting Craig Smith to drive without a licence; £200 for a missing fuel tank filler cap; and £600 for having no 0-licence with £250 costs.

Smith, of Wood Green, London, pleaded guilty to driving without a licence or filler cap. He was fined £180 with £100 costs and three penalty points.

Anthony Ostrin, prosecuting for VOSA, told the court that Smith was driving a 7.5-tonne lveco flatbed when it was stopped in a roadside check. Traffic examiner Stewart Balmer found that the fuel tank filler cap was missing; it had been replaced by a plastic bag held in place by a rubber band. This would allow fuel to escape so the vehicle was issued with an immediate prohibition.

The DVLA database revealed that Smith did not have the C1 licence necessary nor did Highgate Scaffolding hold a current 0-licence.
