A THIRD OF LIVESTOCK trucks stopped in checks were found to be breaking new laws brought in following the foot and mouth crisis.
Oxfordshire County Council's trading standards officers stopped 28 vehicles to check compliance with the law which requires operators to disinfect their vehicle after each journey. The trucks must be cleaned at the site where they have unloaded animals unless the driver signs a declaration stating that it will be cleaned elsewhere.
Most traders were complying with all legal requirements. Nigel Strick, head of trading standards says: "These results are encouraging. A high percentage of the livestock transport community has adopted these disease control measures as standard practice. But 100% compliance has to be the target."
