In the 10 years from 1976 Eaton, with its European engineering centre in Manchester, invested $630 million in research and development. The results include a range of new transmissions: the Twin Splitter series designed for vehicles of up to 44 tonnes with engine outputs of 276kW and maximum torque of 1815Nm; a range of five-, sixand nine-speed synchromesh gearboxes covering a wide span of input torques from 390 to 980Nm; and the Semi Automated Mechanical transmission based on the Twin Splitter gearbox.
