ABOUT 30 small hauliers in Scotland face closure because they have failed to gain professional qualifications over the past five years, according to Licensing Authority Hugh McNamara.
They are among 200 operators who were issued with a licence on restricted grandfather rights between 1977 and 1979, and their licence is now up for rene-. wal.
The other applicants have either qualified themselves or taken on a professionally competent manager, but a core now exists who either were unaware of the new rules or have been unable to pass the CPC examination.
The Highland and Islands Development Board has helped some operators, particularly in remote areas where one lorry serves the whole community.
