WILKINSON TRANSPORT drivers are the highest paid hire or reward heavy goods vehicle drivers in the business, according to the United Road Transport Union.

It has quoted figures produced by the Labour Research Department which shows Wilkinson's January increase of six per cent to £113.54 basic for 38.75 hours plus £21.29 guaranteed overtime keeping it ahead of others in the hire or reward sector.

But it is still 20th in the hgv league table, behind a stream of own-account operators led by Esso, which pays £166.82 basic (4.5 per cent increase) with £15.50 overnight allowance and £1.37 lunch allowance.

International Stores is next with a £163.99 rate for 39 hours, then comes Mobil at £148.79 (including productivity), Total Oil at £137 plus bonuses, and the Wellcome Foundation at £135.99 for 37.5 hours.
