0 New DAF artic tippers proved at Dunkirk
PROTOTYPES of a new DAF articulated tipper are being proved at harbour works at Dunkirk, where long-term plans envisage one of the largest port developments in NW Europe. The combination with an F 2600 tractor will eventually be offered as a factorybuilt package deal. The new tipper has been aimed at the increasing demand for site vehicles which are also suitable for "on road" use. The tipping body is built entirely of aluminium, and at the front the 23ft 7in.-long body has a clear inside width of 6ft in. At the rear, where an automatic tailgate is fitted, the width is 7ft 6in.
Use of "fat singles" on the rear bogie has enabled the main frame members and the suspension units to be placed farther apart. The prototype vehicles are fitted with Edbro twin-ram, five-section front-end tipping gear. A replaceable floor liner of steel-plated hardwood brings the unladen weight of the semitrailer to 7,200kg. On two 11-ton axles (4ft 5,1in. wheelbase) the payload is 22,800kg.
