VRCIM Seaway Containers Ltd., Greenock, Scotland, comes a new skeletal semi-trailer

—the Conway—designed to carry three or more E-type containers simultaneously, with the advantage of easy loading/unloading facilities provided by roller tracks located on the chassis. Containers can be loaded by fork-lift trucks using the rollers, or by sling arrangement.

Two I-section members form the main longitudinals spaced at 3 ft. 3 in. centres, and are fabricated from 4 in. wide flanges welded to a 15 in. deep web member of BS 15 steel, which is reduced in depth at the front end to 6 in.

Cross members of box section connect the two longitudinals to complete the torsionally stiff frame. Additional box section outrigger members support the outer guide rail at each side rave, and also provide securing points for the container corner castings.

Tandem axle suspension is fitted, incorporating a short equaliser beam with slipper ended semielliptic springs, and adjustable radius arms. The hanger brackets have been designed to provide progressive spring stiffness and to ensure good roadholding under varying conditions. Brakes fitted are 15.5 in. by 7 in., S cam type, actuated by type 30 air cylinders operating on the three-line system, and the coupling ends of the brake lines are fitted with Ctype heads to conform to latest Regulations. Fitted to the rear bogie is a load-sensing device which varies the applied braking power in proportion to the semitrailer gross laden weight.

A multi-pull parking brake works by means of sheathed cables connected to the cam slack adjusters. Both axles are solid drawn manganese alloy steel tube beams with forged steel spindles and hubs, on which eight 9.00-20 14 ply tyres and tubes are fitted.

On each longitudinal member is fitted a fulllength nylon track and these support the total weight of the containers through the forklift tunnels. To stabilize and lock each container in position, a plug latch is provided in the side raves to locate in each container corner casting and withstand braking, acceleration and lift-off loads. These latches are locked home by individual slide bolts which are secured in the locking position.

Glassfibre anti-splash panels are fitted above each set of wheels, with full height rubber mudflaps. Immediately behind the flaps an under-run bar is fitted for safety reasons. Lighting is provided by a 24 volt insulated earth return system. The semi-trailer is designed to run at 28 tons g.t.w. when coupled to a tractive unit, giving a nominal payload capacity of 20 tons.
