Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

IN Eastern Europe, some British makers have found that with large specialist vehicles (the types for which these countries have no production facilities of their own) there is a readiness to buy but the sales operation falls into two distinct categories. First is"the sale to the end user on technical grounds, after which this end user has to get the vehicle accepted into his own purchasing plan, and the next and far more difficult part of the operation is to negotiate the sale with the state import-export agency of the country concerned. But Gloster Saro Ltd., for example, have found that, once they are successful with a sale, the contract is honoured to the letter.

Scammell's sales in Russia have been for a highly specialized low-loader tractor! trailer combination, the trailer being of Crane Fruehauf manufacture but the order being negotiated by Scammell; and sales in Eastern Europe for semi-trailers are steadily developing. A recent order of 20 specialbogie semi-trailers was delivered for the haulage of refrigerated meat, and Scammell considers that there is a large potential market for all types of semi-trailers in the future, on which they are actively working.

Another Scammell tractive unit, this time coupled to a Dyson "I"-type low-loader trailer, was recently shown at the Leipzig Fair. This vehicle, a high-speed, long-range truck for hauling 35-ton loads has been specially designed for export markets and will visit Leipzig, Stockholm, Belgrade, Poznan, Brno and Plovdiv in tht period up to mid-October. After this the Scammell / Dyson outfit will serve as a demonstrator anywhere in the world. A 50/60-ton trailer from Dyson has recently been shipped to Yugoslavia, having been ordered for the Skopje steelworks project. This model is one of the Popular range of double-drop-frame trailers which covers models up to 100 tons capacity. In the more standard types, Dyson has shipped to Zagreb 20-ton, straight-frame semitrailer models.

Working behind the iron curtain is a heavy-duty Dyson /Scammell outfit which is a self-loading model of the type in use in many overseas markets, and is over 60 ft. in length and has a carrying capacity of 100,000 lb. Because parts of the operating terrain in Hungary are bad, Dunlop Trakgrip 1400 X 20, 20-ply tyres are fitted in twin formation to the unsprung walkingbeam suspension, which gives the high degree of articulation so necessary when operating over bad terrain.

York trailers have twice sent export sales manager, George Van Hoften. and director of manufacture, Graham J. Brant, through "Checkpoint Charlie" to negotiate business with the East Germans—so far without success.

Similarly a deputation of Russian trailer builders was received at York's Corby works for two-day discussions, which until now has yet to bear fruit. It seems, then, that whilst the Russians and East Europeans have shown themselves willing to buy highly specialized equipment, when it comes to conventional trailers, policy is to build their own.

Crane Fruehauf Trailers have found from experience that Russia and Rumania would rather have a package deal—meaning a tractive unit and trailer—than a trailer only; therefore exports of trailers to these countries are normally tied up with a tractive unit supplied by a British manu facturer.

However, an order Worth £250,000 for containers to be supplied to two of the

biggest shipping companies in Germany was secured a few weeks ago. This order is believed to be the biggest container export order for Europe won by a British company, and the first order for 40 ft. containers placed in Britain.

Boden Trailers Ltd., although at present not directly exporting trailers to Europe, are hoping for orders from European hauliers. They say their new Mark 3 range of TIR models has created a good impression on the continent.
