Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

ANEW range of long-life silencers, carrying a two-year guarantee, has been put into production by Servais Silencers, Ltd., Cricklewood, London, N.W.2. Known as the Servard Interchrome silencer, it embodies a metal treatment process, developed by the Chrome-Alloying Co., Ltd., whereby the internal and external surface of the silencer is transformed into an alloy, resistant to both heat and corrosion. The alloy contains 60 per cent. chromium on its surface, which is about three times the chromium content of conventional heat and corrosion-resisting steels.

The price range has not yet been revealed, but it is expected that the Servard silencer will cost approximately 75 per cent, more than the standard unit. A new device being developed in America to reduce the amount of contaminating gases expelled in exhaust fumes is at present being examined by Servais Silencers, with a view to its application in oil-engined vehicles. It is claimed that the Smog Burner, as it is known, has reduced hydrocarbon content by 97 per cent., and the carbon monoxide content by 82 per cent. •

The exhaust gas is injected into a combustion chamber and it draws in air to produce an inflammable mixture. The crank case " blow-by " is also entrained via the air intake. Combustion is achieved by means of a sparking plug wired to fire continuously as long as the engine is running. The fully burnt gases then pass through in the normal manner.
