APOTTERIES haulier was warned by Mr. J. Else, the West Midland Licensing Authority, at Hanley on Tuesday that a contract A licence only entitled him to carry goods for the persons with whom the contract was made. J. and W. Wass, of Longton, were applying to transfer three vehicles of 121 tons from contract A licence to open A. They had 40 units and they specialized in the transport of pottery from local manufacturers.

At present the three vehicles were specified on contracts to Alfred Clough. Ltd., but a few years ago this organization had gained control of four other pottery companies. The contract A authorized Wass to work solely for Alfred Clough, but now they wished to carry for the subsidiary companies as well. Recently consignments had been moved and they were not sure which undertaking they were from.

Mr. R. M. Hayes, general manager of J. and W. Wass, told Mr. Else that after they had discovered it was wrong to carry for dough subsidiaries, they had not stopped doing it. No attemnt had been made to obtain a temporary licence.

Decision was reserved by Mr. Else until a pending application by J. and W. Wass for a new B licence had been heard. He said that their behaviour from now until the next hearing would affect this decision.
