Intgrosting Evidence Put For. ward in Respect of Metropolitan Licence Applications IN the course of the Metropolitan Traffic Commissioner's resumed hearings last week, one of the more,interesting cases which same forward for consideration related to a class of traffic which is important all over the country and about -which there is particularly strong controversy in the London area.

Gate House Coaches, of Highgate, London, N., had applied for licences in respect of two express-service vehicles to operate between Eustoli. Station and the Arsenal football ground, in the north of Landon, on occasions when supporters of visiting football teams arrive at lEuston. This application was object.ed to by the London General Omnibus Co., Ltd.

It was pointed out by Mr. da Costa, of the. applicant concern, that the service had been in operation for three years, a single fare of 1s, being charged. When asked whether it was true that he was able to convey 115 persons per hour Mr. da Costa replied, "Yes, 115 very grateful people."

The argument of the London General Omnibus Co., Ltd., was to the effect, that, on the occasions of football matches at the Arsenal ground, the Underground trains provided 7,500 seats per hour to Gillespie Road Station, on the Piccadilly line ; also that there were tramcar services and a generous bus service to within about Is quarter of a mile from the football ground.

The reply to this argument put forward by the applicant was that the journey by Underground railway from Boston involved changing at King's Cross, which, it was submitted, was the _ worst station in London from that point of view. Provincial visitors would, of course, be more inconvenienced by a change of trains such as that necessary at King's Cress than Londoners would be, and would much prefer a direct

motor-coach service which involved no inconvenience at -all. The application was finally 'granted.

Other lice.nces granted by the Cord noissioners included some for services to Sttuthend, Ascot, Lingfield, Newmarket, Brighton and Hastings. Considerable --opposition was offered by the L.G.O. Co., Ltd., to, applications by Mr. Charik for services to races, etc.
