alet the Hawk tell you the heroic tale of Sonny the parrot; a red and green macaw who came to the rescue of a man trapped under the wheels of his van.

Richard Stone, 58, from Cheddar in Somerset, had got out of his Sherpa van to open the gate to his allotment but had forgotten to secure the handbrake and the vehicle rolled forward knocking him down and crushing his leg.

As dusk began to fall Richard began to despair, thinking that his cries for help would go unheeded.

How wrong he was. A hundred yards away at the Broadway Caravan Park Sonny had not only heard his cries he was now mimicking them squawking "Help!" at the top of his voice.

This alerted Richard Herd and Jeremy Burstow who work at the park, Herd says: At first we thought someone was winding Sonny up but as soon as we got there he stopped making a noise. In the distance we could hear a man's voice shouting so we rushed out of the park to see what was going on."

Burstow carefully reversed the van off Stone's legs and luckily the damage was found to be no worse than severe bruising.

Not only did Sonny save the day, he added a new word to his vocabulary.
