• Representations from neighbours resulted in a string of environmental conditions being imposed when Cradley Heath-based Rainbow Upholstery was granted a new restricted licence for one vehicle. West Midland TC John Mervyn Pugh heard that the company occupied industrial premises in the middle of a residential area.
Singh succeeds
• Coventry tipper operator Gian Singh, whose previous licence was revoked seven years ago, has succeeded in a bid for a three-vehicle licence at a Birmingham public inquiry before West Midland TC John Mervyn Pugh.
Outside court
• Luton magistrates cleared Nlanchester owner-driver William Kelly of a series of drivers' hours and tachograph offences after James Backhouse, defending, had argued they had been committed outside the court's jurisdiction. Kelly was also cleared of having a defective speed limiter because the summons failed to show the date on which the alleged offence was committed.
Drifting drawbar
• Ryder was given an absolute discharge for using a dangerous vehicle after Droitwich magistrates accepted that a close-coupled drawbar trailer had come adrift from its towing vehicle on the M42 because of a manufacturing fault.
