• Early morning drivers leaving Dublin Port are campaigning to be given a green "wavethrough" at intersections to allow them to beat Dublin's increasing congestion.
Every morning ferries arrive in Dublin from Holyhead, Liverpool, Heysham, and Birkenhead from 06:00 to 08:30hrs. As a result, more than 500 trucks are trying to leave the port at the same time, causing huge tailbacks.
The Irish Road Haulage Association envisages a dedicated traffic light system to take most of the HG Vs out to the western M50 ring road where they would disperse to their various destinations. The 112.1-1A plan is incorporated into Fine Gael's Transport Green Paper for the city.
Local operators have called for the port to operate on a 24hour shift system—they say they cannot return trailers at night because it closes at 18:00hrs, and local carriers returning home are adding to the morning mayhem.
