Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• There was mayhem outside a Lancashire police station this week when a tanker delivering fuel fell through the road and had to be hauled out by a recovery operator.

A driver from Burnley-based T Splitt got the surprise when his 17-tonne Mercedes tanker seemed to disappear into the road after delivering fuel to Lytham St Annes police station. The driver, Vincent Ireland, was unable to reverse out of the 1 in hole. It appears that a collapsed main drain caused the problem.

The road was closed while the emergency services, including the police, fire brigade and North West Gas, checked the vehicle, its 8,000 litre load of unleaded petrol and the area for hazards.
