Osborne bought • Hartlepool-based haulier Osborne Haulage and Plant has been bought for an undisclosed sum by Stockton-based haulage and civil engineering firm G Sweeney. Osborne has 16 tractive units, 50 trailers and 30 staff. Former boss Harry Simpson is retiring.

Plaxton loss • Plaxton Coach & Bus reported pre-tax losses of £2.9m in its preliminary results for the year ended 31 December 1991, compared with a £0.7 loss in 1990. It blames a 40% drop in its production levels, product development and reorganisation costs, and the extraordinary charge of Ulm for closing its French coach building business, Carrosserie Lorraine.

Cheap parking • A lorry park is being opened in Uttoxeter by the local council, which is renting the disused land from bulldozer manufacturer JCB for £1 a year.

Dutch success • The Dutch equivalent of the Road Haulage Assocation, the NOB, says that 97% of Dutch transport companies will be members by the end of the year. The RHA represents about 15% of UK hauliers. The RHA is looking at ways of offering associate membership to continental operators.
