• Five oil companies have come together to offer a European card system which will corner 3,000 service stations in 16 countries.
Texaco, Elf, Agip Petroli, Petrogal and Repsol say the number of participating stations is expected to rise to 5,000 in at least 20 countries by the end of next year.
I=1 Shell's European fuel card can now be used to pay motorway tolls in Portugal. The card is accepted wherever drivers see "Pagemento Automatico" signs in Portugal; toll booths at the Mont Blanc and Frejus Tunnels, and on four Austrian autobahns.
