THE NORTH EAST Bus Preservation Society's collection of about 50 vehicles dispersed around the country can now be assembled under one roof. An old engine shed at Wardley, Gateshead — a listed building — is being leased to the society.
The latest addition to the collection is what seems to be an AEC Regal coach with Beadle body which was once operated by Northern General and was found in a dilapidated condition on a Sussex farm. Brown Wharrier, a local haulage firm which grants the society special terms, brought the vehicle back home.
Society members, pleased with their new find, are unlikely to enthuse over the headline in a local newspaper: "Collectors bring home rotten coach."
