'LANS for a Elm lorry parking complex in the London docklands vere moved a step forward this week when the Greater London :ouncil's transport committee approved the lease of land at Beckon.
The site at Claps Gate Lane, 3eckton, has been reserved for mme years, and the London )ocklands Development Cor)oration has agreed to finance he provision of access roads rvith urban development grant :rom the Department of the Envi.onment.
The site is close to the pro3osed interchange between the )rojected East London river crossing and the A13 Tilbury :runk road, and it is intended to relieve on-street parking problems which exist at present.
A developer is prepared to lease the site from the London Borough of Newham on a 125year lease at a rental of 15 per cent of the tariff payments received, and is prepared to share part of the cost of developing the site.
Initially, only off-street parking will be provided, but subsequent development could include hostel accommodation.
