TO PREVENT indentation from the wheels of roll pallets or pallet-handling trucks, Crown Decorative Products have specified an all-steel platform for the Ratcliffe tail-lift fitted to a new van currently being evaluated at Crown's Glasgow depot.

The tail-lift has a capacity of 1.52 tonnes (1.5 tons) and is mounted on a special 6.7m (22ft) body built by Van Bodies (Lanes) Ltd of Lancaster.

The body is framed around its perimeter with aluminium extrusions and has 14mm (.55in) thick panels made of Glasonit plywood faced with glass-reinforced plastics.

Although the floor is of extruded aluminium planking, the rearmost 1.22m (4ft) is overlaid with aluminium chequerplate to facilitate the manoeuvring of hydraulic-lift pallet trucks.

The new van is based on a Ford chassis and will have a multi-purpose role, carrying mixed loads of bulk palletised goods on timber pallets as well as multi-drop loads enclosed in specally built, lockable rollpallet cages.

A line of these roll pallets can be positioned on each side of the vehicle being secured individually by straps fastened to Load-lok channelling. Large orders can be accommodated on two timber pallets at the rear, leaving space between for load access. Gross vehicle weight is 14.5 tonnes (14.3 tons).
