Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

French permits

FRENCH permits for British hauliers have been raised from 31,400 to 35,000 on the general quota. Those hauliers who have been getting an allocation will be able to have a 10 per cent increase on last year. And Dr John Gilbert, Transport Minister, has said that it will now be easier for hauliers who have not previously received an allocation to get one.

The crunch

A MEETING of owner-drivers and independent hauliers interested in forming a co-operative is to be held in London tomorrow (Saturday). The meeting, chaired by transport consultant Mr John Wells, will be hammering out a constitution for the co-op group. In a statement he says that rules have been drafted and the organising committee has completed its work. Now it is up to the prospective members to show that there is the support for the idea. The meeting will be at the Great Eastern Hotel, Liverpool Street, London, at noon.

Fewer heavies

GOVERNMENT FIGURES issued this week show that there has been a drop of 23,000 in the number of trucks on the roads in contrast with an overall increase of a quarter of a million in the total number of vehicles on the roads.

The roads are now home to 17 million vehicles with 27,000 more light commercials under 30cwt—an overall increase of 3000 commercial vehicles. The 30cwt to 3-ton class showed a nominal drop of 1000 vehicles —under one per cent.

Profits rising

PROFITS in the Mitchell Cotts Transport company have gone up by over a fifth in the sixmonth period ended December 31 compared with the same period in 1974. The company made a pre-tax profit of £473,000 on its turnover of £3,396,000.

The company hopes that the upward trend in profits will be continued during the next six-month period ending June 30. They have announced a dividend of 1.155p per share.
