CONTRASTING reports of the condition of vehicles bought from British Road Services are being received from successful tenderers. One operator told The Commercial Motor this week that the three lorries which he had bought could not have been in better order if he had maintained them himself. Another said that the 11 he had pachased were an

in bad condition.

Birmingham officials of the Transport and General Workers' Union maintain that, at the present rate of disposal, denationalization is bound to fail. Mr. Harry Lett, regional trade group secretary of the commercial section, said that those who clamoured for denationalization were not taking advantage of the facilities offered. It was, he added, significant that none of the former big operators in the Midlands was seeking to return to the industry.

LONDON AND HOME COUNTIES

Eleven vehicles in four units, all of them in bad condition, have been purchased by Home Counties Plant Hire, Ltd., Pegasus Works, Roebuck Road, Ilford, Essex. Three of them have already been replacedby Dodge 105-type 5-tanners with Perkins P6 oil engines, helper springs and oversize tyres. Special A licences for these vehicles have been granted by the Metropolitan Licensing Authority. The other eight exB.R.S. lorries are being replaced at the rate of one a week by Dodge models.

Services are being operated from London to Scotland and other parts of the country. Before nationalization, the company had 35 A.E.C. oilers and Dodge vehicles, and had recently renewed their fleet. They operated regular services to Scotland, the north of England and Plymouth.

Messrs. W. H. Humphreys and Son, I Sydney Road, Watford, have bought three Seddon 7-ton platform lorries, all only 10 months old and in excellent condition. "We had to pay a considerable figure for this unit and although we were not given the opportunity of starting up the engines or testing them whcn viewing before tendering, we are most pleased with them," a spokesman told The Commercial Motor.

"We have replaced two of them with new Bedford 7-ton vehicles fitted with Albion engines, and the three will shortly be equipped with containers."

The unit is already engaged on longdistance work. Services are being run to Lancashire and Yorkshire. Old customers have returned. The firm now have 15 vehicles.

Thomas R. Wall and Co., Ltd., Dover. have taken over one of the three vehicles acquired by Messrs. George Potter, 3 York Street, Dover (The Commercial Motor, February 5).

Mr. W. T. Gray, 33 Lemsford Road. Hatfield, Herts, has acquired a 1949 MorrisCommercial and two 1948 Thames 5-tonners. They are being used for furniture removals and the transport of machinery all over the country.

Two small units, comprising two Foden six-wheeled 12-boners and two Bedford 5-tanners, have been taken over by Amalgamated Removers and Transport, Ltd.. St. Albans. They now have 20 vehicles and are hoping to buy more.

A. D. Thompson, Ltd., 273 Pentonville Road, King's Cross, London, N.1, have been granted special A licences for six vehicles (16 tons 11 cwt. unladen).

A second unit, based at Coventry has been purchased by Mr. E. G. Bale, 261 Coulsdon Road, Old Coulsdon, Surrey. It consists of an Albion 12-ton six-wheeler nI4 and a Maudslay Mogul 8-tonner. He will operate it from Coventry. Otway and. Golder, Ltd., 40a Jasmine Grove, London, S.E.20, whose fleet totals 40 tippers, long-wheelbase lorries and lowloaders, have bought an E.R.F. 25-ton machinery carrier from the B.R.S. at Southampton.

NORTH-WEST

Special A licences have been granted to the following:—

F, Southworth, Ltd., Springfield, Babylon Lane, Adlington, Lanes, for two articulated and one rigid vehicle (181 tons, including two semi-trailers). Mr. H. Swain, The Holm, Withinlee, Prestbury, Cheshire, and Messrs. W. Carman and Son, The Bungalow, Scholar Green, Stoke-on-Trent, who have, each taken over two vehicles acquired by Rileys Transport (Allostock), Ltd.. Scholar Green.

R. Maudsley and Sons, Ltd.. Croston Street Garage, Blackburn, two vehicles (9 tons). Mr. E. S. Powell, 5 Abbots Nook, Chester (base at Lorne Street, Chester), one vehicle (31 tons).

Christtmass, Marine Hotel, Hornsea (two vehicles based at 926 Bessie High Road, Hull), L. Senior, Ltd., Stonegate Garage. Meanwood, Leeds, 6 (two), Mr. S. Leach, 13 Vivien Road, Lower Grange, Bradford (thre* F. Lawiey (Bradford), Ltd., Beldon Garage, Otley Road, Unclercliffe, Bradford (one), Coopers (Wetherby), Ltd., Barley Fields Lane, Wetherby (one).

William Bradley and Co. (Coal and Transport), Ltd., Abbeydale Road, Sheffield, who, as reported in The Commercial Motor on February 5, bought five vehicles. are undertaking long-distance haulage for the first time in their 27 years' history.

Mr. W. Bradley, managing director, said that the company paid £2,800 for the vehicles plus a sum for the A licences.

It was not cheap," he said, "but as we are the first in the field and taking a longterm view, it should be worth while."

WEST MIDLANDS Bedford (Wallsall) Transport Co., Ltd., Ball Street, Walsall, have acquired unit 66/1509, consisting of two Leyland Comet 7-ton drop-sided lorries. The company started in 1919. The fleet now comprises six vehicles.

Mr, R. Mann, 120 Hylton Road, Worcester, has purchased unit 66/112, consisting of five vehicles, one trader and premises at 106 Harley Road, Sale, Cheshire, and unit 66/113, comprising 1 vehicles, two trailers and premises at Back Parsons Lane, Bury. Ernest Transport, Ltd., Speedwell Road, Haymill, have acquired unit 66/1542—two vehicles (5 tons unladen) at Jenner Street, Wolverhampton.

WESTERN AREA Messrs. Goulding Bros., Nailsworth. Glos, are developing their business and intend to run services between London, Bristol, Gloucester and Stroud Valley.

EAST MIDLANDS Three purchases are reported in this area this week. Messrs. E. D. Walker and Son, East Markham, Newark, have taken over three vehicles from the Balderton, Newark, depot of B.R.S.

Mr. H. Arand, 14 North Moor Road, Scotter, Gainsborough, has purchased a Leyland Comet tipper. Mr. Leslie Barnes, 96 Boultham Park Road, Lincoln, has bought four vehicles but is keeping only one. He is disposing of the others to Mr. Ellis Lyons, 71 Western Avenue, Lincoln. and Mr. Albert Howe, 98 Boultham Park Road, Lincoln.

EAST ANGLIA Messrs. Corbett and Miller. 538 Woodbridge Road, Ipswich, have bought a Dodge vehicle from the Diss depot of B.R.S. and another vehicle from Ipswich.

Swaffham Livestock Transport has been formed by Messrs. W. J. Mason and B. J. Nelson, of Terrington SL John, Messrs. A. Dent, of Hilgay, and Messrs. A. W. Darkins, of Stoke Ferry, with premises formerly owned by the Swaftham Baling Company. The new firm arc operating two cattle floats taken over from the /JAS. at Swaffham. The firm hope to buy more vehicles. There were six cattle trucks at the Swaffham depot of B.R.S., but tenders for only two were accepted.
