PERKINS which, as I recalled on April 24, took six world diesel speed records in 1935, is still ahead of the field in some other respects. It is believed to be the first of a number of Western manufacturers of vehicles or components to conclude a deal with China, in this case for the supply of engines for fourwheel-drive vehicles which Beijing (Peking) Automobile Co plans to export. This company produces about a tenth of China's cars and commercial vehicles.
Perkins is also the biggest foreign supplier of engines to neighbouring Japan, although its share of the market is minute.
