THE removal of the tax on fuel oil
used by buses would be a major contribution towards the improvement of urban and rural transport services and would bring about some security to the transport industry, said Mr. Frank McLeavy (Labour, Bradford East) in the Commons when he moved an Opposition new clause to the Finance Bill designed to end the tax. This tax was a super luxury tax on the travelling public and an indirect tax on industry itself, he said. Mr. McLeavy recalled that the 10 per cent surcharge had been imposed to meet a difficult financial situation. but when the emergency ended the surcharge remained. That was a breach of faith by the Chancellor. "When a Labour Government comes in in a few months it will at long last give justice to the travelling public ", he forecast.
The clause was rejected by 200 to 166.
