'THE Minister of Transport has (Hsi missed an appeal by the Railway Executive and the United Counties Omnibus Co., Ltd., against the sanction given by the Eastern Licensing Authority to Mr. G. A_ Baxter, of Sandy, Beds, to operate an express service to Bournemouth.
Last year, United Counties were granted permission to run feeder buses into Luton, where passengers could join coaches going to the south coast. Mr. Maurice Holmes, for the appellants,• submitted to the Ministry inspector, Mr. R. L. H. Hiscott, that an insuffi
cient period of 'trial had been given to this arrangement.
Mr. A, H. Wild, for the respondent, contended that the feeder service was inconvenient. United Counties merely wanted to keep his client out. They had had their chance and had not made use of it.
Mr. Hiscott recommended that the appeal should fail. Mr. Baxter's licence permitted him to run up to three coaches on Saturdays during the summer, and a maximum of two at Christmas time.
NO TAKE-OVER AT HEXHAM IT has been decided by Hexham Urban District Council not to take over the operation of the town's bus service as a municipal enterprise. The works committee reported that an application for the necessary powers under the Tramways Act would be costly and would arouse much opposition from existing operators.
