Some Advantages of I AST week we travelled over the Side-engined "1,000 miles in a Northern

Coach General coach of the particular

side-engined type for which this company is noted. The design lies to the credit of Major G. W. Hayter, the chief engineer of the company. Our experience of all-day touring for seven days on end showed that it is a most practicable type giving excellent visibility, complete freedom from exhaust gases within the body, smooth and unusually quiet running, whilst there is no drop in. the floor and seat levels, except for the central gangway, and advantage can be taken of every inch of space, affording unrivalled passenger accommodation without cramping.

Social Functions I OOKING in at Kew, on a which Promote Cor"recent evening, on the box dial Feeling . . ing bouts staged by the Chrysler Motors Social and Athletic Club, we not only witnessed some excellent boxing, but gained a .good impression of the value of social events of this kind. Although the fighting was done in earnest, there Was a splendid spirit of goodwill behind the proceedings, which was well reflected B18

in the appreciation shown by the spectators. Mr. Benjamin King, the new chairman of the Chrysler organization, was obviously aware of this fact, as he made known in. comments on certain of the bouts. The M.C. was that inimitable trade personality " Gibby," who certainly helped the evening to go with a swing.

Road Transport IN the April issue of the official Unity in New South aorgan of the Commercial Wales Motor Users Association of Vic toria, New South Wales, reference is made to the reconstruction of the Association, with an amended constitution by Which it will be divided into sectional associations, each organized to protect its individual interest, and with direct representation on the committee of management of the parent body. This scheme appears to have met with general approval, and two rival groups, the Passenger Carriers' Association and the Road Haulage Association, have disbanded and have come under the sectional wing of the C.M.U.A. (Victoria). It is hoped that this will overcome the tendency for individual interests to break away to form small bodies.

An Instance of the IN his extremely informative Useful Function Served trolleybus paper, reported by Conferences. . . elsewhere in this issue, Mr.

Priddle criticizes the manner in which, in certain cases, the change over from trams to trolleybuses is made, stressing the inadequacy of the power-distribution systems. He naively suggests that motor-generator lighting is a solution to the

problems thus created. Whether inexperience or shortage of funds be the explanation, let the authorities concerned mark, learn and inwardly digest. This paper struck us as being a first-class example of the immense value of conferences generally.

Keeping in Touch THE Institute of Public with Foreign Cleary:I Cleansing makes a point of ing Developments. . extending its interests beyond this country, and each year it welcomes at its annual conference a number of representatives of foreign countries. A feature .of the conference programme is the presentation of a paper by an authority from the Continent, and this exchange of ideas is welcomed by members who watch with interest the methods adopted in other countries in dealing with the important problems involved in the many and varied branches of the public-cleansing service.
