• Around 20 jobs will be lost at Darlington-based Caldaire North East following the decision to close Trimdon Motor Services as the first step towards integrating the two Trimdon companies bought last March. About 13 buses will also be disposed of.
The 34 buses and 71 staff based at Trimdon Grange will be split up between other depots of the United Automobile subsidiary, and the depot, offices and workshop at Trimdon will be put up for sale.
Caldaire says the Trimdon Grange depot is too close to the United depot at Peterlee. Much of the work is being transferred to Peterborough with the rest going to Durham and Bishop Auckland garages. A small eight-bus depot will be set up in the Trimdon area.
Staff will be expected to relocate to new garages; Caldaire North East hopes most of the job losses will be achieved through natural wastage.
Teeside Motor Services, the other company which Caldaire North East bought in March, is currently undergoing service integration in Cleveland, but Caldaire insists Teeside will continue to operate under its own banner.
