Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Peugeot-Talbot is expanding its tri-axle special vehicle production line at Stoke to build a single-rear-axle version under 3.5 tonnes GVW. The new model is still in the development stage, but an order for 10 vehicles is already on the books.

The 4 x 2 uses a similar ALKO chassis extension to the tri-axle, mated to an Express chassis cowl with the same full cage body construction. At 5.605m the overall length is less than that of the shortchassis Freeway bus. It is expected to be a direct competitor for the Spacebus, produced by Coachwork Walker which is currently in receivership.

The Freeway has been a success as a welfare bus; Peugeot-Talbot says it is responding to demand for a smal ler version of the vehicle.

While the Spacebus was in production the company felt there was no room for a competitor. But now that its future is in doubt, Peugeot-Talbot is clearly signalling its intention to fill the gap.

Also under development is a police version of the tri-axle bus, equipped with riot screens and smaller windows than the civilian model. It was produced in a matter of weeks following consultation with police chiefs, and can be equipped as a secure personnel carrier, incident room or for riot control.

Panels or windows can be fitted as required and a number of different body styles have already been produced including a dental surgery and library. Orders from ambulance services are also anticipated.
