• First-half truck sales over 3.5 tonnes plummeted by nearly 28%, from 1989's record level of 196,630 to 164,574.

!yew Ford has pulled clear of Leyland Daf to take almost 25% of the market. A poor showing in May, when it was overtaken by Mercedes-Benz, left Leyland Daf with a 22.5% share.

Mercedes-Benz's first-half registrations are down by 24%, but it has held on to third position in the market with 4,323 registrations (16%).

Fourth placed Volvo suffered in the first-half with registrations down by 42% to 2,399. Fifth placed Renault's fortunes mirrored the market as a whole, falling by 27%, but ERF and Scania registrations are also down by over 40% this year. MAN has improved its first-half market share with 1,132 registrations down 22% from 1,457.

The worst news comes from Foden, where first-half registrations were more than 48% below last year's levels at 493. Hino's half-year figure is down nearly 47% to 169, and it registered just 24 trucks in May, 13% to 229, giving it 0.8% of the market.

In the panel van sector (up to 3.5 tonnes) Ford's dominance has slipped slightly. First-half Transit registrations were down 18% from last year, in a market which has dropped 16.6% overall. Leyland Dal has fared better with a fall of 6.6% to gain a 10.9% share.

Renault's fortunes in the panel van market have been disappointing following the relaunch of the Master and Trafic, with first-half registrations down almost 30% to 5,019.
