THE Road Haulage Association is going into public relations literally in a big way with a prototype of the 40-tonne lorry for which it is pressing. It is using a Ford Transcontinental tractor with York three-axle semi-trailer to spread the gospel of road transport in general and the Compact campaign in particular at shows throughout the country. Compact is a contrived acronym for Conservation of Oil, Maximum Productivity and Competitive Transport, although the word can hardly be applied to the artic from which the campaign was launched at the Royal Agricultural Show at Stoneleigh. The imaginatively decorated giant is a far cry from the pathetic former dental trailer that made a tentative, apologetic appearance as a publicity vehicle at the RHA conference at Eastbourne several years ago.
