THE CRUISER, HMS Belfast, n-loored opposite the Tower of London, is becoming a popular resort with transport people. It has recently been used for press conferences by National Carriers and Volvo, and for a reception by Pirelli to mark the 21st birthday of the Cinturato tyre in Britain.
Volvo chose the ship for the launch of the 1358 bus chassis with VVadham Stringer Vanguard single-deck body (Commercial Motor, June 21). The bus is known as the Volvo Vanguard and Mick Charter, who skilfully handles the company's publicity, would have preferred to charter (to coin a phrase) HMS Vanguard but he could not find it.
The idea of the new bus, built to rival the Leyland National, was not conceived until Volvo and VVadham Stringer met at the Glasgow Show . last November. The chassis was delivered to the bodybuilder in February and the prototype was completed towards the end of May, so nobody wasted any time.
I am told that the Vanguard has been described in Scotland as a man-eater. I must remember to find out why.
