PASSENGER transport undertakings up and down the country face increasing needs for either retrenchment or cost cuts. They are having to cope with Government policies requiring bus services to be run on commercial lines at a time of inflation coupled with local authority finance cuts.
The result is a national wave of crisis measures.
Busmen with United Counties in Northampton have waived an overtime agreement and agreed to work only 40 hours a week to avoid cuts in manning. But the company may still declare redundancies in other departments.
Their stand earned them the gratitude of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, who said: "The efforts of those East Midlands bus crews were highly commendable and indicated that, in considering their own pay, they were considering its effect, or possible effect. on the unemployment of others.
London Transport is holding consultative talks in order to reduce' the number of white-collar staff in several departments. An announcement of proposed cuts is expected soon.
